Art and Design at Brook

Our Vision for Art and Design:
- For all our pupils to have a knowledge base of a range of artists from a range of counties and periods in history as well as a range of styles and techniques and be able to discuss these pieces with others – Cultural capital
- For all our pupils to have a variety of skills across a range of techniques to be able to design and create artwork of their choice. For our pupils to feel that they are and can be an artist – Courage and creativity
- For all our pupils to enter their secondary education excited by the next stage of learning in Art and Design and continue this passion into their lives.
- For all our pupils to understand the value of art to their lives and/or the lives of others as a creative outlet which can support mental health, well-being and build life skills – Care
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum has been mapped out over the course of a 2-year cycle, ensuring a progression of skills and knowledge with no gaps nor unnecessary repetition. The coverage includes all necessary learning from the Primary National Curriculum 2014 but goes beyond this, providing further depth and coverage and exploring aspects with greater meaning for the pupils at Brook.
Our curriculum provides cultural capital for the children throughout the curriculum from Early Years to Key Stage 2. Every year, the children learn about three, four or five different artists from a range of art styles, art movements, cultures and disciplines. Within each unit, the children focus on two or three key pieces of art from the artist. By the end of Key Stage 2, children will have learnt about 26 artists and 60 works of art (see next page).
Our curriculum enables all learners to learn well and build their knowledge and skills sequentially, using their prior learning as a foundation for their next steps. Links to previous learning are provided using key concepts: ‘Elements of Art.’ This contributes to their ability to know and remember more.
